When purchasing a YubiKey, you should adopt a primary and backup key strategy. When setting up two-step verification for an account, configure both the primary and backup keys for authentication. In the event that the primary key is lost or stolen, you can still log in to your account using the backup key. The backup key should also be stored safely.
